OWN BOOKS IS GROWING..

OWN BOOKS in SCHOOLS
TO KEEP IT GOING NOW

SCHOOLS CAN SELF SUSTAIN THE SCHEME

OWN BOOKS  www.ownbooks.co.uk is a book recycling scheme set up in
schools by Julie de Bastion in Jan 2014 to enable primary and preschool
children  to choose from a wide variety of books to take home and keep for
FREE.

Since that time more and more schools have asked to become
“OWN BOOKS” schools, and therefore we are now obliged to enter phase 2
of OWN BOOKS.

This is a simple way for schools  to run the scheme for themselves and become self sustaining. It also means that schools  in any locality, can now adopt this scheme so that more children may enjoy books and reading with no obligation to buy or return the books

Here’s how the scheme works

After an initial Introduction  of OWN BOOKS  scheme, and a presentation at the school assembly ,(with selections of books on display.) A bookcase  is allocated just for the Own Books books, and flyers are sent home and /or web site posted for those wishing to find out more about it. www.ownbooks.co.uk This explains the scheme to parents and children and staff.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS THE BOOKS ARE SOURCED

1        DIRECT DONATION OF BOOKS TO SCHOOL

Parents, children and any other associates are invited to donate books directly to the school, where they will be sorted, the covers cleaned with antibacterial wipes and labeled inside with the identifying Own Books logo label, and stacked on OWN BOOK shelves by two appointed  year 5 or 6 monitors. (with optional staff supervision)

2  COLLECTIONS FROM LOCAL DESIGNATED CHARITY

SHOPS BY SCHOOL VOLUNTEER The school finds a volunteer /co-ordinator to collect books from designated charity shops in the local area that are willing to supply the school on a regular basis.

Current lists of these charity shops in each area are made available to the volunteer. Volunteers may want to introduce, approach and recruit new charity shops to the scheme, and after an initial arrangement about times of collections, the shops are usually happy to keep giving the books provided they are collected on a regular basis, which is usually monthly or bi-monthly according to agreement).

A small donation of approx £1 per collection is made to the charity shop on each occasion.

This amount, PLUS petrol and possible parking fees are reimbursed to the volunteer on a monthly basis.

At present  Own Books, through Henley Community Library has a small grant to repay volunteer expenses with a claim form from the Library, in Henley in Arden Email Judith Lindley or leave a message

henleycommunitylibrary@hotmail.co.uk at 01564 794885  Tuesday and Friday 9am to 7pm, Saturday morning 9am to 1pm.

However, grants may not be ongoing and so we are urging each school to find  ways of funding OWN BOOKS  themselves.

If professional  OWN BOOKS labels are required they are available from
