BOOKS TO LOVE & SHARE
There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away,
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll;
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human soul.
AN INNOVATIVE BOOK RECYCLING PROJECT TO HELP YOUNG CHILDREN WITHOUT BOOKS HAVE THEIR OWN BOOKS AT HOME
The Own Books scheme was founded by Julie de Bastion in January 2014, who through being part of the Reading Army at the local Henley primary school, who were the first to take up the scheme, discovered that several children did not have books at home. This inspired her to come up with this idea to provide children in school with free books that they could take home themselves, to either keep or return if they wished. The Henley Community Library managed by Judith Lindley was the first to recognise the potential of this scheme and gave it her full support, helped find volunteers, funding and space in the library for the special Own Books bookshelf.
WHAT THE PROJECT AIMS TO DO
1 Encourage young children to develop an early love of books and reading through choosing and having their own books at home.
2 Allow children to select one or two books a week for themselves from the age appropriate categories, to take home when it suits them.
3 Avoid any need to buy or obligation to return the books.
4 Remove any stress and financial constraints on parents over acquisition of books.
5 Encourage parents to read with their children at home.
HOW THE PROJECT WORKS
Books are collected from local participating charity shops or books are donated to the schools directly by parents.
The Own Books scheme relies on volunteers to collect books from the charity shops and deliver them to the participating schools.
LABELING & CLEANING
All books are "processed", being cleaned and labelled with the Own Books logo so as to identify them to the children.
